Cet été qui chantait: A work inspired by Gabrielle Roy presented at La Troupe du Jour

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, March 26, 2026 – La Troupe du Jour presents Cet été qui chantait, a work by Marie-Ève Fontaine inspired by the writing of Gabrielle Roy, running April 10-12, 2026 at Studio 914 in Saskatoon.

First published in 1972, Cet été qui chantait (Enchanted Summer) is a work by Gabrielle Roy, a francophone Canadian writer and a major figure in Canadian literature, known for the sensitivity of her perspective and her attention to the details of everyday life. Adapted for the stage by Marie-Ève Fontaine, who is also one of the performers, the work takes the form of visual theatre shaped through music and movement.

A crow carried by the breeze travels over mountains, valleys and rivers, guiding the audience to a small green-shuttered house. There, Gabrielle observes the life around her: grass swaying in the wind, flowers growing where they are least expected, birds along the shoreline and fireflies at dusk.

Accessible to all audiences, especially children and seniors, the 60-minute performance offers a sensory journey filled with softness and humour. This production by Flammèche Théâtre, directed by Pierre Robitaille, features music by Gérald Laroche and unfolds through a delicate stage language where images, rhythm and texture come together. All three performances
of Cet été qui chantait in Saskatoon will be presented in French with English surtitles, along with special programming detailed below.

Bringing together Gabrielle Roy and Marie-Ève Fontaine, Cet été qui chantait is part of La Troupe du Jour’s 40th season, which highlights women’s voices under the theme She Narrates, We Resonate. The company will also celebrate its 40th anniversary on May 30, 2026.
