Cantate pour légumes: A new Fransaskois play presented by La Troupe du Jour

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, January 27, 2026 – La Troupe du Jour presents the third production of its 40th season, Cantate pour légumes, a new fransaskois play with English surtitles, running February 5 to 15, 2026, at Studio 914 in Saskatoon.

Cantate pour légumes is a celebration of the life cycle. Four “vegetables” are bored at the seniors’ home and would like to go on a pilgrimage–to Compostelle. A lyrical play, with music, Cantate is a reflection on life, aging, mortality, nostalgia, freedom and self-determination.

Written by fransaskois author Madeleine Blais-Dahlem, Cantate pour légumes combines spoken text and singing. The work is inspired in part by the author’s personal experience, including her mother’s life and time spent in a care home. Helen Pridmore serves as musical director, with music that supports the dialogue and adds emotional depth, along with a few subtle musical Easter Eggs. The production is directed by Charlie Peters, who brings together text, music, and movement in a form that is both unexpected and engaging. The cast features professional artists Frédérique Baudemont (The Avocado), Gail Enright (The Turnip), Carol Greyeyes (The Asperagus), and Bruce McKay (The Gourd).

As part of its 40th anniversary, to be celebrated on May 30, 2026, La Troupe du Jour is launching the $40,000 for 40 Years campaign. Donations to the Ian C. Nelson Endowment Fund, administered by the Fondation fransaskoise, will help provide stable support for La Troupe du Jour’s programming, as well as fransaskois artists and artistic creation.
