LA TROUPE DU JOUR
Artistic Mission Statement
La Troupe du Jour is a professional, not-for-profit organization that develops theatre in Saskatchewan through creation, training, production and presentation. This framework of activities is set out in the charter instituted in October 1987 and revised in September 2007.
Community Mission Statement
The company is dedicated to the development of French-language theatre in Saskatchewan. In this connection, through its leadership role in playwriting, the company is working to create and develop an original dramaturgy for Western Canada. Over the past decade, it has developed a dramaturgical mentorship process intended to support Fransaskois playwrights at every stage of creation. This mandate for creation is the cornerstone of La Troupe du Jour’s artistic mission. The company also makes contemporary writing for the theatre better known by presenting the work of Canadian playwrights
STUDIO 914
SITE OF INTERCULTURAL EXCHANGE
La Troupe du Jour’s Production Centre and Studio 914 form a genuine cultural crossroads that promotes equality, inclusion and accessibility for everyone. Studio 914 is a space where different cultures and generations can come together and engage in dialogue. It welcomes artists, administrators and viewers who represent a broad range of cultures, backgrounds, orientations and beliefs, serving as a major source of pride for the company.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
La Troupe du Jour actively supports environmental respect and conservation. The extensive retrofitting of the building itself was mindful of sustainable development, incorporating skylights, solar panels, in-floor heat and programmable thermostats… In the day-to-day, raw materials are sorted and recycled, paper is rationed and recyclable materials are given priority, for example in building the sets for our productions.
HISTORY
Founded in 1985, La Troupe du Jour is the only professional French-language theatre company in Saskatchewan and for that reason plays an essential role in the Fransaskois cultural landscape. For 12 years, the company has maintained an artistic presence in Francophone communities across the province by touring shows, supporting playwriting and presenting programs in the schools.
The company underwent many changes in 2019 and welcomed Artistic and General Director Bruce McKay as well as Administrative and General Director Gabriel Gosselin. It has enjoyed financial stability and assembled a professional team of artists and administrators, presenting a solid program in keeping with its mandate of creation, production, presentation and artistic training. In this way, it has gradually expanded its professional program and today presents itself as the principal professional French-language theatre company in Saskatchewan and one of 13 active professional Francophone theatres outside Quebec.
In its 30-year history, the company has produced more than 80 plays, half of which are original creations or adaptations of original works by authors from Saskatchewan. Developing these plays has enabled the company to present its audiences with texts that reflect Saskatchewan realities.
